ABOUT THE ARTIST

Catherine Zhang was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, in 2001, grew up in Harbin, and came to Portland, Oregon, with her parents at 18. In 2019, Zhang entered Oregon State University and majored in Studio Art. In past practice, Zhang explored different social phenomena, development trends, and personal views based on her experiences of living and part-time jobs in other countries, combining her understanding and criticism with events and expressing them on the canvas.

Zhang's works are varied, both in style and technique. Her style will be affected by the mood at the time of creation, so there will be significant changes in her works. On the other hand, the medium's evolution is also the critical difference between her works. Her works involve acrylic painting, sculpture, digital art, screen printing, and some new genre art forms. Different central ideas and viewpoints influence her choice of medium, and at the same time, other mediums will bring different expressions to her works.

Recently, Zhang, inspired by works of Neo-Dadaism, has begun to discuss social issues through a combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. This project aims to expand her new genre of creation while better expressing her personal opinions and emotions. For Zhang, the new genre's creative approach makes it easier for her works to connect with the audience and bring different expressions to specific ideas.
